Where is Carambola?

Carambola area occupies a beautiful valley which rises through the hills that dominate the western end of the island of St. Croix. Just fifteen minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from either Christiansted or Frederiksted, Carambola is one of the most conveniently located places on the island.

Looking at the map below, St. Croix is just east of Puerto Rico. In fact, most flights to St. Croix leave from San Juan, Puerto Rico, or from Miami, Florida.

Zooming in, you can see Puerto Rico and St. Croix, as well as a whole host of other islands in the Caribbean that made up the archipelago.

The island of St. Croix is approximately 17 miles long and 4 miles wide. As you can see, the Carambola Golf & Country Club sits between Christiansted and Frederiksted. Set in a valley and surrounded by mountains, the rain forest, and luxury homes, Carambola is a perfect golf destination.

History of St. Croix

St. Croix was discovered by Columbus on his second voyage to the New World in 1493. While the island has had a variety of different owners, Denmark, which ruled from 1733 until they sold it to the United States in 1917, left the most enduring legacy of its pre-American rulers. After they took it over, the Danes proceeded to turn St. Croix into an agricultural powerhouse. They divided the island into plantations or estates, the names of which are used in postal addresses to this day. These estates, mostly sugar plantations, were run largely by people from the British Isles, who sold their products to Danish merchants in Christiansted and Frederiksted.

As agriculture went into decline after the end of slavery in 1848, the remains of this affluent era can still be seen all over the island. Ruins of over a 100 sugar mills are to be seen in every corner of the island. Many of the great estate houses are still in use today as homes, guest houses or museums. The main town of Christiansted was the capital of the Danish Virgin islands and still retains much of its 18th colonial structure and character. Indeed, it is hard not to feel a sense of history throughout most of the island.

Our About Carambola page has history information within the Carambola region.

Facts About St. Croix

Located in the Caribbean, just east of Puerto Rice, St. Croix is the largest of the United Sates Virgin Islands. The island is 28 miles long and shaped something like a paddle, with the narrow handle less than a mile wide at the east end, and approximately seven miles in width at its widest point on the western end. Despite its relatively small size, St. Croix has a wide mixture of climate and topography. Point Udall on the eastern tip has a dry climate and arid terrain, while the much damper west end is generally lush and green, with mountains and valleys covered with a rain forest. St. Croix has a population of 55,000, mostly concentrated around the two main towns: Christiansted, in the center of the island on the north shore; and Frederiksted, on the island's west coast.

Christiansted / Frederiksted

Christiansted and Frederiksted are the two main towns on the island of St. Croix.

Christiansted
Once the capital of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Christiansted is the perfect place to begin your visit to St. Croix. Fort Christiansvaern, built by the Danish as protection from pirates and other plunderers, stands over Christiansted Harbor. Nearby, the Steeple Building houses artifacts from St. Croix's Carib and Arawak Indian settlements and colonial sugar plantations.

The Cruzan Rum Distillery, in operation for over 300 years in the same location, is home to one of the world's finest rums. The distillery (formerly known as Estate Diamond) offers guided tours of the facilities that explain the distillery process, the importance of rum in the island's history, and the story of the estate grounds.

Frederiksted
On the west end of the island, Fort Frederik still stands over the Victorian homes and nineteenth-century churches of the town of Frederiksted. Frederiksted is also home to the very popular Cruzan Rum. As you can imagine, bottles and cases are available for sale. Also, St. Croix's only lighthouse, built in the late 1800s, overlooks the port from the cliffs of Ham's Bluff. [Adapted from source: www.usvitourism.vi]
