"FOR A FIRM CHIP, HIDE THE GRIP"

I teach the pendulum method of chipping where there is ABSOLUTLY no wrist break. The easiest way I've found to accomplish this is to ask my students to hide the grip behind their left wrist (right-handed Golfer). If the wrists break, the butt end of the grip becomes visible. If a good "pendulum stroke" is made, the butt end of the grip stays hidden.

1. The SET-UP: Weight 75 to 80% on the left side (lean for the green), hands in front of the left leg, knees flexed, ball in the center of an open stance.

2. The STROKE: A pendulum motion on a slightly descending plane.

3. The SHOT: The ball must be landed on the putting surface (as close to the edge of the green as possible).

4. THE CLUB: Note the distance between your ball and the green and also the distance between the edge of the green and the cup. Then select the club with enough loft to carry the grass before the green and then roll the correct distance to the hole.

The general rule of thumb is MINIMUM air time, MAXIMUM ground time. Your goal is to get the ball rolling like a putt as soon as possible. The beauty of this method is you are learning one stroke yet you can use any club between a lob wedge and a 5-iron producing a variety of shots.
